The truly spectacular Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve is situated in the serene Franschhoek valleys and mountains of the Western Cape. This well loved nature reserve and its many various hiking trails and passages have been declared part of the UNESCO Cape Winelands Biosphere Reserve, home to some of the country’s loveliest plants and flowers. More so than just its offering of show-stopping views over the Franschhoek Valley and its fragrant blends of diverse plant life, Mont Rochelle has become something of a legend among local and international fitness enthusiasts, with a selection of amazing hiking trails ranging from easy and short to challenging and time consuming.
Families can break away from the constant techno crazy lifestyle for a day or discovery and exploration, packing some snacks and a camera along to capture the amazing views and to photograph a few treasured vacation memories. Just below the nature reserve lays the gorgeous Mont Rochelle vineyards and a 150 year old wine cellar, nestled against the Klein Dassenberg Mountains. Those visiting Mont Rochelle in search of the natural beauty can be amazed at the vast array of fynbos at this reserve, including families of stunning ericas, proteas, pincushions and restories. Hiking trails include the likes of the popular yet demanding Perdekop Trail (horse head trail), which is a 13.5 km trail which leads up Perdekop Peak at an elevation of 1575 metres, probably sounding easier than it is but certainly rewarding at the end, with its unsurpassed views. Enjoy a less tazing hike with the DuToitskop Trail (only 7.5 km’), or the family friendly Breakfast Rock Trail. Open every day from 5 am to 7 pm.
