The little village of Velddrif sits at the mouth of the Berg River, on Route 27, in a region well known for its bird life, fishing and wildflowers. Situated on the Crayfish Route, Velddrif is famous for its seafood dishes - notably Bokkoms (dried fish), a West Coast specialty prepared and dried upon the embankment of the Berg River.
Velddrif's main industries are fishing and salt and organised tours of the salt factory are available. The Velddrif Bridge is a breathtaking sight with flamingos and pelicans using it as a base. The mouth of the Berg River features a host of various water birds such as the small Blue Heron while otters and water mongoose are a commonly sighted as well.
Other attractions close to Velddrif comprise of the Cape Columbine Lighthouse, Langebaan Lagoon, the West Coast National Park, West Coast Fossil Park as well as the Velddrif and Rocherpan Nature Reserves, where bird watchers can discover over 190 separate bird species.
