A small and traditional town which was established in the late 18th century with strong Dutch influences, Vredenberg is predominantly an Afrikaans speaking area. The town’s name is Afrikaans and “vrede”, when translated to English, means “peace”. Originally, this charming town was named “Twisfontein”, which has a less appealing name that translated to “Troubled Fountain”. In the earlier years of Vredenberg’s existence, farming and countryside living was the backbone of this small town, however in more recent years; Vredenberg has become the transportation and commercial hub of the West Coast area.
