Cape Medical Museum

For those who are searching for an interesting lesson in the captivating medical history of Cape Town, Green Point is home to the Cape Medical Museum which is situated in the old city hospital complex, which is over 100 years old. This interesting and somewhat eery museum was founded in 1980, and features amazing exhibitions that are centered around the Cape's medical history, showcasing many of the application methods and out of date treatment facilities and remedies, as a reflection of the past and the progress made since. The Cape Medical Museum also offers educational programs and guided tours throughout the exhibition spaces, that focus strongly on the history of medicine, and looks into the subject of medical plants. Some of the rooms on display in this exhibit are the Disease Room which commemorates prominent outbreaks like leprosy and scurvy, the Hospital Ward which portrays a typical recovery ward from the early 20th century and some of the equipment used, and a Dispensary and Doctor Consultation room, which has medical items dating back to the late 19th century. This museum is open Mon-Fri, from 9 am to 4 pm, and entry is free with an option for small donations.
