About Table Mountain

Table Mountain the most iconic landmark of South Africa and also recently been named one of the new seven wonders of the world. The history of Table Mountain dates back more than 30 000 years back and was also initially named Hoerikwaggo by the indigenous Koi and San people of South Africa. Table Mountain was holy to these people as they believed that their God lived there. The first recorded climb was completed be Portuguese navigator, Admiral Antonio de Saldanha in 1503, and when reaching the pinnacle, he named it "Taboa da caba" (meaning table of the Cape). Table mountain houses over 350 hiking trails that lead to the top, but also provide quick access with the cable car established in 1929. Because of the mountains unusual characteristics, cloud formation is abundant along the peak and was thus informally named the "Table Cloth". This beautiful wonder was also declared a natural park status in 1998 due to the fact that 70% of all the plants found on the mountain are endemic. It's really not that hard to believe that Table mountain is South Africa's most photographed landmark!
