A magical and wondrous escape from the seemingly never ending technologies of this day and age, The Rainbow Puppet Theatre which is located in Constantia is a rare gem to be appreciated by small children and accompanying parents alike. Hanging in the theatre is the message“Puppetry is a remedy against the damage of modern civilization - it must fold and develop the fantasy of the child".
This easy to love and old school puppet theatre takes kids through lively, spirited puppet performances that will captivated their senses, where the puppets (of which there are about 300, in total) are all handcrafted and are mostly rod or glove puppets - the set and most of the props are also handcrafted by the imaginative and talented individuals behind the scenes. The shows performed are renditions of classic fairy-tales such as Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White, that are inspired by the Grimm fairy-tales and aim to focus on the life lessons these stories offer to young children. The Rainbow Puppet Theatre is the only permanent Puppet Theatre in the country, keeping Capetonians and guests visiting from afar in-touch with this whimsical and fun performance art, which is still popular all over the world even though it is considered to be an old fashioned story-telling style, dating back as far as 3000 BC.
These uplifting and magical productions rotate every month, and take place every Saturday morning from a nook in the Kindergarten building at the Waldorf School, in Cape Town. The Rainbow Puppet Theatre was established in 1992, and is now run and managed by a former pupil at the Waldorf School, Alison Fenton.
