Come the end of January, experience a kaleidoscope of colour at the J&B Met at the Kenilworth Racecourse. The oldest and most prominent horse race in South Africa (going as far back as 1883, when it was known as the Metropolitan Mile), the event has become a firm Cape attraction not only because of being one of the big 3 races of the country, but notably so because of the social event it has become, with guests decking themselves in originally designed apparel that goes against the conventions of everyday attire.
Going back as far as 38 years (since sponsors J&B stepped in), the J&B Met is an event that Capetonians are quite familiar with, despite the limited number of people interested in horse racing, or dressing up and socialising. Every year the organisers of the event choose a theme which is always in line with the daring use of colour and style that the J&B Met is famous for. The theme for this year’s J&B Met is ‘Made for the Mix’, focussing on combining contrasting elements, again seeking to shake up the accepted ideas about socialite attire.
But, of course, don’t forget the equally important reason why the J&B Met is so well-regarded. Spectators will be coming to bet on and watch their favourite horse, hoping for a win, not just on the race track but for their pockets as well!
What else happens during this fashion extravaganza?
A regular occurrence at the J&B Met is the award for the Most Elegant Couple. Besides the event being known for seeing the most famous faces of South Africa, this award is one of the highlights of the J&B Met, and next time will be no different.
Of course, while you’re enjoying this event, make sure to see if you can spot your favourite TV star or presenter!
During the race, food, drinks and live entertainment is provided in the form of a Public Village which will be set up on the winning straight of the racetrack. Open to the public, the area will have food trucks, bar facilities and plenty of seating and shade. The entertainment comes in the form of Cape Town’s top radio stations on site and one of South Africa’s best bands providing the main act.
