In just a few weeks, the city of Cape Town will be experiencing a colder period as the season of winter goes into full swing. It doesn’t snow in the Mother City, and the temperature hardly ever drops to sub-zero levels, but after just one day out in a classic winter’s day in Cape Town, even the most disbelieving tourists will prefer to spend their holidays indoors.
But while the winter is still to arrive, the Cape still enjoys favourable weather, perfect for enjoying the outdoors, which is a must in this part of South Africa, known throughout the world for its surrounding natural beauty. If the pressure of the approaching colder months and the rising wind is making it difficult to come up with any ideas, don’t worry, we have here 10 of the best activities to enjoy in Cape Town during the last weeks of lovely weather.
Enjoy a cable car ride at Table Mountain
Table Mountain is one of the iconic features of the Western Cape and the pride of the Cape, even before it became one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Many have made their way to the top of this exceptionally shaped mountain, either on foot or via the famous cableway service. Standing at the top, you won’t find a much better spot to watch the sun go down over the ocean. While the wind has picked up in Cape Town lately, there are still days when the weather is favourable. Contact the cableway company to find out when you can buy a ticket and experience this famous Cape Town attraction. To find out more on the Table Mountain Cableway, click here.
Go for a hike on one of the many trails of the Cape
The Cape boasts numerous hiking trails, from easy to difficult and relaxing to adrenaline pumping. The wind may make many hesitate at the idea of a hike, but there are several trails that don’t involve ascending a mountain at all. The trail between Constantia Nek and Kirstenbosch does climb to a height of 218 metres, but it hardly compares to the hiking trails up Table Mountain. There is another trail through the lovely Newlands Forest, and while it may prove challenging for some, no one needs to worry about heights.
Watch the sunset at one of the Cape’s best sundowner spots
One of the best things about Cape Town is the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean. From as far south as Kommetjie to further up the West Coast, there is a wealth of areas along the Atlantic that enjoy this sight throughout the warmer months. Wherever you enjoy accommodation in the Cape, you are certainly not far from the western coast of the Cape. To make the most of it, treat yourself to a delicious meal with friends or family at one of the many establishments of the Cape while admiring the picturesque twilight. Race with the wind on a blokart
A fun activity that thrives in the wind, blokarting is perfect for this time of year. A sport/hobby that was first developed in New Zealand, it is no surprise that the Cape provides numerous spots to enjoy a race with the wind on a blokart. If you perhaps don’t know what a blokart is, it is a sail attached to a chassis with wheels. The sail is controlled by hand via a steering bar that has been shaped like a steering wheel. The blokart has proven over time to be quite manoeuvrable, treating riders to an exhilarating experience. If you would like to rent or buy a blokart, the best place is Blokart Land Sailing, located in Sunrise Beach, in the coastal suburb of Muizenberg. The best places to go blokarting include Sunrise Beach in Muizenberg, Buffels Bay Beach near Cape Point, as well as Big Bay.
Take a scenic drive along Chapman’s Peak
Chapman’s Peak is a mountain 15 kilometres south of Cape Town, along the coast of the Western Cape, between Hout Bay and Kommetjie. Chapman’s Peak Drive is an elevated road going around the mountain that has proven to provide fantastic sights for drivers, especially while travelling south towards the Chapman’s Peak Estate. Chapman’s Peak Drive can be accessed from Hout Bay.
Go sandboarding in Atlantis
Sandboarding is a thrilling activity that is well known throughout the world. The best place to experience this exciting activity/sport is on the dunes in Atlantis. While you may be new to the sport and not possess any of the equipment, there are several establishments throughout the Cape, easily found online, that rent out equipment as well as provide tours to the dunes in Atlantis. Even if you’re enjoying accommodation close to the Mother City, you still have the chance to enjoy this adrenaline pumping activity.
Enjoy the ride at Cool Runnings in Bellville
The only relation this attraction has to the movie is the adventure sport of tobogganing. Cool Runnings in Bellville features a 1,25 kilometre twisting steel half-pipe that offers an exciting ride on a bob sled. The highest speed reached was 40 kilometres per hour (don’t worry, the bob sleds do come with hand brakes, ensuring you can go at a speed you are comfortable with). While it obviously appeals to kids, the bob sleds are suitable for all ages, and kids under the age of 8 can ride with an adult on a bob sled with a double seat.
Have fun with ten-pin bowling
When the weather’s not suitable for going out, treat your family and yourself to some ten pin bowling. Always a fun activity, ten bowling is sure to produce plenty of laughs and rivalry between teams. There are two ten-pin bowling establishments in the Cape worth noting, in the GrandWest Casino in Goodwood and in Stadium on Main in Claremont.
Go on the hunt with laser games
An alternative to paintballing, laser games have proven to be just as popular in the Cape with kids as well as for team building exercises. Get your pulse racing as you and your team explore the terrain while keeping watch for the opposing team, while trying not to get shot. While enjoying a vacation in the Cape, laser games are perfect for large families all enjoying a holiday together. There are establishments in various areas of the Cape, including Claremont, Melkbos and Helderberg.
Test your rock climbing skills indoors
That’s right. While indoor rock climbing is nothing new, in Observatory, Cape Town, is CityROCK, an establishment offering the opportunity for visitors to test their skills in a bouldering area (a 3-4 metre climb without a rope) and on their higher walls (with a rope, of course). While you might want to try a climb but have a fear of heights, CityROCK provides a safe environment, so visitors can have fun, meet new people and enjoy just one of the many attractions of the Cape.
Don’t worry, even though winter approaches, you can still enjoy many activities and attractions in and around Cape Town. This list is just an introduction to what you can find in the Cape.
